GOVERNMENT AND ADMINISTRATION

Except for matters concerning defence and foreign affairs the Falkland Islands are self- governing with the people the heart of the democracy.

The islands are United Kingdom overseas territory by choice. Executive authority is vested in Queen Elizabeth ll, head of state since 1952. As she is absent from the islands executive authority is exercised in Her Majesty's name by a Governor.

The Executive Council, the policy making body of the Government, generally meets each month but if required can meet more often. The Governor, who is the presiding officer and whose responsibilties include external affairs and defence, normally acts on the advice of the Executive Council which is made up of three members of the annually elected Legislative Assembly, (only these three elected Legislative members are permitted to to vote on Executive Council) The same ex officio members - the Chief Executive, and the Director of Finance also attend. The Chief Executive, head of Public Services, presents and controls policy options and strategies to the Legislative Assembly Members for consideration and implementation. The Attorney General and CBFSAI can attend and speak.

There are no political parties on the Falklands Islands so politics are minimal. All Legislative Assembly Members are elected as independents and there is no organised opposition. Governmental and legal proceedings are very similar to in Britain. Photograph by Jean Sinclair
